Spring Forward: From Village in Bloom to Safety on Our Beaches
As we welcome spring with traditions like the Mayor’s Egg Race, the Hoag Classic, the International Boat Show, and the return of 3rd Thursdays, spring-breakers have been met with triple resources and triple fines. We have ample signage and NBPD officers out in full force to remind beachgoers to follow the rules. Below are some preliminary enforcement stats:
✓ Area 1 (Balboa Peninsula)
✓ Area 4 (CdM)
✓ Traffic Division (Motor Officers and DUI Enforcement)
Last year, I initiated a ban on nitrous oxide and flavored tobacco sales as well as a temporary moratorium on smoke shops to give us time to develop necessary guardrails to protect our community, especially our youth. If approved at our April 14th City Council meeting, new regulations would require smoke shop operators in Newport Beach to obtain a permit, act responsibly or risk having their permit revoked and closing their doors.
I am thrilled to announce the return of Corona del Mar’s 3rd Thursdays on April 16th!
As Mayor, it is so special to see our initiative, that began as a grassroots effort, blossom into a signature Village tradition, thanks to presenting sponsor the File Group, décor sponsor B.Candy, Visit Newport Beach, Greet Corona del Mar magazine, and our dedicated volunteer team.
There’s so much in store for April’s “Village in Bloom” event! We have something for everyone, including live music by Pinch Me! Band, petting zoo at the CdM library, a Tennis & Pickleball Club popup in the Cozy Earth lot, an interactive butterfly exhibit and mini ice cream cones at B.Candy parking lot, a flower bar at Gallery Sonder, game truck at Mathnasium, party at the File Group, happy hour specials and DJs spinning, throughout the corridor, art exhibitions, pet adoption, scavenger hunts, doggie treats, samples, giveaways, and more!
We look forward to seeing you out-and-about as the Village comes alive on April 16th!
Property Crimes Detective and SWAT team member Joshua Granger came to us three years ago from Monrovia PD. In the short time he has been with NBPD, he’s already been a recipient of the Award of Merit in 2023, and the Lifesaving Award in 2024.
A former Division 1 golfer, he chose to pursue a career in law enforcement because he wanted to feel like he was making more of a difference in society, which he has clearly already accomplished. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and family, serving their church, golfing, and competitive pistol shooting.
Fire Engineer Jon Lauderdale has been with the Newport Beach Fire Department for twenty years. He works on Engine 67 and says he’s a “big station guy.”
Service is second nature for him; when he was a high school ROP teacher he helped save a student’s dad from suicide. He recalls that while playing baseball in the Czech Republic, he watched the firefighters on TV as they responded on 9/11, and knew that’s what he wanted to do.
Pictured here with his wife, Debi, and his daughters, Brinkley and Tenley, he enjoys fishing and hiking with his family as well as coaching the girls’ softball teams. He shares that he’s “very appreciative of the opportunity to serve and protect the citizens of Newport Beach.”
