Welcome Chief Dave Miner & Safety Updates for Newport Beach

It is with great pleasure and utmost confidence that I introduce our new Chief of Police, Dave Miner, a 22-year veteran of the Newport Beach Police Department.

February 1, 2025

In his role as acting chief, Miner has already demonstrated steadfast leadership in his implementation of our new anti-camping ordinance, Flock safety LPR program, and quality of life measures. Chief Miner began his law enforcement career with the Newport Beach Police Department in 2002. He worked a variety of assignments, including patrol officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT Team member, Property Crimes detective, and Crimes Against Persons detective.

In 2011, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and worked as a patrol sergeant, Field Training Program supervisor, SWAT Team supervisor, firearms instructor, Crime Suppression Unit sergeant, and Professional Standards Unit sergeant. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and worked as a Patrol Watch Commander, Crisis Response Unit Commander, Support Services Division lieutenant, and Detective Division lieutenant. In 2023, he was promoted to the rank of deputy chief and worked as the division commander for both the Patrol/Traffic and Detective Divisions. On December 14, 2024, he began serving as the acting chief of police.

Chief Miner is a graduate of several advanced law enforcement training courses, including the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, the Force Science Institute Certification Course, and the California Police Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University’s Drucker School of Management. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University. Chief Miner is a board member for Leadership Tomorrow, a non-profit organization of citizens and leaders who work together to make a positive impact in their communities. He is also a member of the Newport Beach Police Department’s Baker to Vegas running team and has competed in the annual event since 2004. Miner resides in Orange County with his wife and children.

Residential Burglary Arrest

This arrest comes days after their deployment of layered vigilance, including the use of drones, infrared heat detection, and patrol on foot, ATVs, and horseback. Newport Beach is among the many communities, countrywide, targeted by South American Theft Groups. These professional burglars often enter the Country on tourism visas, which do not require or allow proper vetting. They are typically unarmed, accessing vacant or unattended homes via golf courses, canyons, and trails after dark.

NBPD will continue to support their proactive efforts and will soon be bolstering the intel from the already-installed Flock Safety cameras by bringing Fusus online with their new Crime Information Center. We ask that residents partner with us by hardening their homes and neighborhoods and immediately reporting any suspicious activity to the Police Department. Download the home security checklist linked on the right to evaluate your home’s security.

Fire Risk Mitigation

The City Council approved an eight-year contract with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy to reduce fire risk.

The maintenance agreement provides for the annual removal of non-native plants and restoration of native plantings that retain moisture and reduce fire risk. Our Newport Beach Fire Department Fire Marshall and Deputy Fire Marshall have been working around the clock to educate every homeowner, HOA, and community group about fire prevention. Once again, however, property owners must do their part to reduce fire risk.
