Summer is in full swing in Newport Beach, marked by expanded Safety Enhancement Zones in Corona del Mar and strong enforcement efforts over Memorial Day weekend, resulting in numerous citations and arrests.

The Balboa Island Parade was a blast and will be followed by lots of summer festivities and fun, starting with a Flag Day celebration on June 14th at 11:30 am at the Civic Center and the first day of the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards on June 17th.
The rollout of my initiative to expand the Safety Enhancement Zone to all summer holidays was a success. This is the first time Corona del Mar has had the Safety Enhancement Zone or dedicated officers.
Over Memorial Day weekend, night watch officers made seven arrests in Corona del Mar for a variety of violations, including being in a stolen vehicle, drug-related charges, possession of nitrous oxide, drunk in public, open containers of alcohol, and warrants.
In CdM, officers issued 131 NBMC (Newport Beach Municipal Code) and CVC (California Vehicle Code) citations, and over 100 parking citations were issued between NBPD and LAZ, the City’s parking management contractor.
NBPD will continue to maintain a proactive posture and approach for deterrence and order, citywide.
I’m honored to have earned the support of my colleagues around the County to serve as the Vice Chair of the Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG).
I’m honored to have earned the support of my colleagues around the County to serve as the Vice Chair of the Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG), allowing me to be an even stronger advocate, regionally, for the priorities of both Newport Beach and Orange County. In my first year on the OCCOG Board of Directors, we filed a legal challenge against the State’s Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) mandates. This month, OCCOG helped successfully oppose South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) Proposed Amended Rules 1111 and 1121, which would have required the replacement of gas water heaters and furnaces with electric alternatives, placing a significant cost burden on residents and strain on the power grid.
The City expects to complete the installation of 16 AEDs by the end of summer.
After the tragic loss of a Newport Beach father while coaching on a neighboring city field last year, I asked City staff to take the necessary steps to ensure the availability of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) at all of our athletic fields to help save lives in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.
The City expects to complete the installation of 16 AEDs by the end of summer. The devices will be available to coaches, players, and the public by calling 911 to receive a code for the lockbox.
Firefighter Bobby Salerno wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps when he decided to join the Fire Department 22 years ago. He has spent more than half that time supporting his colleagues and their families as the steadfast steward of the Newport Beach Firefighters Association. He’s truly grateful for the opportunity to work in a beautiful city alongside people he respects and is proud to call friends, and is humbled by both the impact they have on people when they need it most and the words of kindness they receive from residents. Bobby and his wife, Laura, live in Temecula and enjoy road trips, boating, and spectating at their 14-year-old daughter Samantha’s equestrian activities.
Off-duty, I find Offer Joe De Julio on the opposing side of the field at our sons’ soccer matches, but in uniform, you don’t want to mess with this SWAT-trained officer or his K-9, Goose. De Julio says he caught the bug for the thrill of police work when he went on a ride along with an NBPD officer 20 years ago. He joined the Department in 2007 as a Police Cadet and graduated the academy in 2011. He loves that every day in his job is different and appreciates the opportunity to serve the community of Newport Beach, which he refers to as a “citizenry of exceptional quality and kindness.” And, as if his devotion to his official duties was not enough, he has taken on the role of impassioned advocate for the 193 sworn and non-sworn members of the Newport Beach Police Association as President to ensure these Department employees have the necessary support in their high-stress, dangerous jobs.
